  • Denver Woolen Mills & J W Smith – Lasting Landmark #2 July 12, 2017
I had seen the plaque marking “Site of the First Colorado Woolen Mill” at City Bark before I ever started writing Across the Creek. It actually inspired the starting, knowing that there were so many stories to tell. When I finally got around to tackling this early Denver Landmark (not officially landmarked), I was in …

  • Lasting Landmark #1 -West Denver Congregational Church January 1, 2017
The structure completed in 1881 was just the western section of the structure standing today. It was small, only 32 by 48 feet, and reportedly cost the congregation $3500 to construct. Apparently short $800, A. C. Hunt threw in $500 as an additional tribute to his wife, and passing a hat through the pews raised the rest.

  • Help Save La Alma Lincoln Park History December 29, 2016
CLICK HERE TO DONATE La Alma-Lincoln Park Neighborhood Association (LPNA) is working to document the historical significance and architectural character of one of Denver’s oldest and oft-neglected neighborhoods. Historic Denver has granted us $10,000 of our $16,350 budget, but we can’t receive a cent if we don’t raise the remaining amount in matching funds. […]

  • “The only wagon road running southward entered Denver by way of Ferry St…” September 10, 2016
"There was little travel in the early days between Denver and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and no direct road connected the two towns. The only wagon road running southward entered Denver by way of Ferry Street, in later years changed to Eleventh. Ferry Street was the first street, going from East Denver westward, that ran through West Denver from Larimer Stre […]

  • Rebooting Denver History to Connect Auraria and Downtown [Confluence Denver] April 15, 2015
I loved this recap of Denver’s original settlement and neighborhood. It offers a thorough description of issues past, present, and future… “Auraria  — that’s Latin for gold — sits next to the site of the original gold strike in 1858 that brought settlers to Denver. The modern neighborhood is a college campus that still attracts …

  • Broadway Park: The Denver Bears’ First Home in La Alma Lincoln Park April 14, 2015
The arena was actually first built for an Association of American Wheelmen in 1893, and also hosted many bicycle races, college football, coursing, and other local athletic demonstrations. The park was centrally located and connected to the city by Denver Circle trains, and then the Tramway Co. trolleys.Tebeau's determination to see professional basebal […]

Veronica Barela: Love of Community Drives Sustainable Change La Alma-Lincoln Park native and longtime NEWSED leader, Veronica Barela, was recently featured in The Profile, and has done us the service of adding to the neighborhood's historic record. It sometimes feels like two-worlds here in La Alma-Lincoln Park, and she inhabits both without apology. I […]

  • The Denver Circle Railroad 1882-1898 March 12, 2015
" AN EPOCH IN THE HISTORY OF DENVER. The Circle Railway, when completed, will be twenty miles in length, completely surrounding the city with it's track and stations, and will be the means by which the now cooped-up inhabitants of the city can reach suburban homes at a trifling expense and with a rapidity that will ROB DISTANCE OF ITS TERRORS. […]

  • Amick Storage and Transfer Building (and Painted Sign) February 24, 2015
New Life Coming to Old Building Throughout the history of La Alma Lincoln Park, there has not been much focus on architectural preservation. Many churches, schools, homes, businesses and even the incredible County Jail were either neglected or simply not valued enough to save. Without the structures to remind us, time obliterates the memories of our neighbor […]

  • Two Early Structures Just Demolished on Kalamath February 11, 2015
I think we all expect this neighborhood to see some changes, but we all have an interest in maintaining the diverse and unique character of our built environment. The homes may have been considered small for some, but that's one of the legitimate ways to preserve affordability. Not everybody can afford to live in a big house, right? Preserving historic […]
