Veronica Barela: Love of Community Drives Sustainable Change [The Profile]

I recently wrote about the Amick building on Santa Fe Drive, and made mention of the property owners, NEWSED. I expressed support for the organization and it’s efforts to preserve affordable housing near the downtown core and transit. Readers may also recall my hesitation to tell the story of La Alma, the significance of the Chicano Movement, and my desire to let the living tell the tale for now. La Alma-Lincoln Park native and longtime NEWSED leader, Veronica Barela, was recently featured in The Profile,  and has done us the service of adding to the neighborhood’s historic record. It sometimes feels like two-worlds here in La Alma-Lincoln Park, and she inhabits both without apology. I feel fortunate to have met Veronica, and am delighted to share this account of recent history with the neighborhood.
